k.d. lang To Perform At "A Sounds Eclectic Evening"
Summer may be coming to an end but at KCRW the party is starting – this fall, KCRW’s signature music event A Sounds Eclectic Evening is back. Spanning three continents and a kaleidoscope of sound, this year’s line up is as eclectic as it gets with Canadian singer k.d. lang, UK rockers The Duke Spirit and the Argentine-Uruguayan collectiveBajofondo set to take the stage. More artists will be announced in the coming months and, as always, be prepared for some surprises.
Tickets for the show, scheduled for October 12 at the Gibson Amphitheatre, go on sale to KCRW members on August 22. Tickets are available to the general public on September 4. The show is a fundraiser for the Santa Monica-based public radio station.
“ Every year when we put this show together, we choose artists that represent what we all play here at the station. From an artist like k.d. with an incredible and diverse body of work to a blossoming act like The Duke Spirit, that has made its mark on the rock scene with just two albums,” said KCRW Music Director and host of Morning Becomes Eclectic Nic Harcourt.
Ever since KCRW started bringing its eclectic format to a live arena seven years ago, ASEE has served as a launching pad for the station’s new musical discoveries and indie favorites. And it’s a place where chart toppers like The Shins, Coldplay, Death Cab for Cutie and Norah Jones perform special sets to thank the station for its support of their music and to return the favor.
k.d. lang has a distinctive, dreamy voice and a sensuality underlying her work. She is an unparalleled performer with an emotional depth and warmth that has attracted a substantial audience throughout her career, as well as multiple Grammy wins. She has blazed her own path in everything she does, from vintage country to smoky lounge pop and duets with greats like Tony Bennett. She’s currently touring in support of her new international Top 10 record, “Watershed.”
The Duke Spirit, led by the beautiful and self-assured Leila Moss, have grabbed the rock gauntlet this year. Their newest album shed the rawness of their debut for powerful, passionate and hook-filled anthemic rock. Comparisons have been made with everyone from Sonic Youth and the Pixies to Bjork. They headlined KCRW’s SXSW showcase to a packed house and raving reviews earlier this year.
Led by Grammy and Oscar-winning producer Gustavo Santaolalla, Bajofondo is known best for taking the traditional music of their ancestors – tango – and fusing it with electronic music, giving it a modern twist and creating a spectacular collage of sounds. Their latest album “Mar Dulce” features Elvis Costello and Nelly Furtado, among others.
Since 2001, KCRW’s benefit concert, A Sounds Eclectic Evening, has featured performances by: Aimee Mann, Beck, Beth Orton, Blackalicious, Café Tacuba, Coldplay, Damien Rice, DJ Shadow, Elliott Smith, The Shins, Gary Jules, Jem, Jurassic 5, Kinky, Cold War Kids, Liz Phair, Nellie McKay, Norah Jones, Ozomatli, Pete Yorn, Shelby Lynne, Lily Allen, The Like, Death Cab for Cutie, The Polyphonic Spree, Thievery Corporation, Franz Ferdinand, Van Hunt, Zero 7 and many more.
